External Floating Roof Drains

Sandborn Roofs is the authorized Canadian distributor of Mesa Rubber flexible roof drain systems.

Floating roof storm water drainage systems are a vital component to the stability and operation of your external floating roof tank. Water buildup from rain and melting snow add a significant amount of weight on the floating roof system. A properly designed and functioning floating roof drainage system will ensure your tank will continue to operate properly.

Roof drainage typically involve a recessed drainage sump near the center of the floating roof, which opens to an internal articulating pipe or hose system that directs the water to a drainage nozzle on the tank shell. Because the drainage system is immersed in the stored product it can be subject to turbulence, chemical attack and mechanical wear and tear.

As a tank operator, you need to choose a drainage system that will reduce the risk of failure, at least till your next maintenance interval, which can range from ten to twenty year intervals.

When choosing a floating roof drain for your external floating roof system, you should consider the following:

  • Drain System Diameter
Drain systems typically range in diameter from three to six inches. API 650 standards recommend 3"Ã¸ for tanks under 120' in diameter, and 4"Ã¸ drains in tanks over 120' in diameter.. Sandborn Roofs recommends using a 6"Ã¸ . drain on tank with diameters over 160', especially in areas of high precipitation.
  • Drain System Position
Proper positioning of your drain system within your tank at a location that will not cause interference with other tank internals such as the floating roof leg supports is critical. Multi-coil drain systems, such as the Mesa Resist-All-CladTM system, with controlled, repetitive lay patterns, significantly reduces the risk of physical damage.
  • Floating Roof Operating Levels.
If you have a very low operating position, with less than 3' of clearance under the floating roof, a single coil flexible roof drain, such as the Mesa Armor-CladTM system would provide you the clearance required and maximize tank operating capacity.
  • Stored Product &Temperature
Your drainage system should be fully compatible with the chemical composition and temperature ranges of the stored product. The possibility of future product changes should also be considered for compatibility.

Mesa Resist-All-Clad Hose Drains

The Mesa Resist-All-CladTM Flexible Roof Drains provide operators with a solid, industry tested drainage solution. Using a combination of stainless steel armor cladding and 100% aromatic resistant MesalonTM flexible material, the Resist-All-CladTM drain system is suitable for a very wide variety of stored products.

A unique and highly beneficial feature of the Mesa Resist-All-CladTM roof drains is the multi-coil design, which ensures the drain assembly remains localized underneath the floating roof, virtually eliminating the risk of interference with tank internals or entanglement with the floating roof leg supports.

Multi-coil design creates a predictable, controlled, repetitive lay pattern on the tank floor. Every time the floating roof raises and lowers, the Resist-All-CladTM will travel the same path, and not slide against the tank floor or come into contact with tank internals such as: floating roof legs, inlets, outlets, heating coils or water skimmer lines.

The Mesa Resist-All-CladTM hose drains are ideal for both new and existing tank retrofit applications, requiring minimal modifications to internal piping.

Each Mesa Resist-All-CladTM hose drain is designed, tested and manufactured to meet your tank requirements, offering the following features:

  • Compatible with pure M.T.B.E., 100% aromatic hydrocarbons (Benzene & Toluene), pure alcohol, gasoline, jet fuels and crude oil.
  • Smooth internal fluid way for low flow resistance, with no corrugation to trap sediment or cause turbulence.
  • Slight negative buoyancy in stored products including light chemicals, heavy crude oil and water.
  • System ensure less maintenance, less product loss, reduced shutdowns and maximum service life.
  • Sandborn Roofs can provide field installation in western provinces and installation supervision across Canada.

Mesa Armor-Clad Hose Drains

The Mesa Armor-CladTM Flexible Roof Drains provide operators with a solid, industry tested drainage solution. Utilizing a combination of stainless steel armor cladding and 100% aromatic resistant nitrile-based flexible material, the Armor-CladTM drain system is suitable for a very wide variety of stored products.

A highly beneficial feature of the Armor-CladTM roof drains is the sump to shell, continuous single-coil design, which reduces the number of joints and provides a repeating lay pattern.

Single-coil design also facilitates operation of the floating roof at a much lower clearance, allowing operators to maximize the usable storage capacity of the tank system

The Mesa Armor-CladTM hose drains are ideal for both new and existing tank retrofit applications, connecting directly from the floating roof sump to the tank shell in most applications..

Each Mesa Armor-CladTM hose drain is designed, tested and manufactured to meet your tank requirements, offering the following features:

  • One continuous single-coil length regardless of tank diameter or height.
