Emission Control Products

Sandborn Roofs is the Authorized Canadian distributor of Mesa Rubber Environmental Covers. With such emphasis on environmental impact reduction, every new and existing volatile organic chemical (VOC) storage system is subject to stricter tolerances for emission control.

The full-surface contact design of External Floating Roofs already reduces a significant amount of product emissions, however even the best designed external floating roofs have vulnerable areas that allow emissions of VOC into the atmosphere.

The typical emission paths for floating roof systems are the perimeter seal, column or gauge pole penetrations and support leg penetrations. Each penetration can create a direct transmission path for product emissions into the atmosphere, if left uncontrolled. Historically, sliding lids with flexible seals were used to reduce emissions along the pole penetrations, however they do little to prevent emission loss along the slotted gauge pole. Sliding lid seals also tend to degrade rather quickly from exposure to weather, solar radiation, chemical attack and general wear & tear during operations.

New advances in emission controls for floating roof penetrations and leg supports include the use of flexible urethane (such as MesaThane 6036) or Polyester (such as Mesalon 7010) coated fabric materials. These covers or "˜socks' surround the entire penetration opening and isolate the emissions from the atmosphere.

When choosing an emission control product for your external floating roof tank, you should consider the following:

  • Leg Support Emission Paths
Most external floating roof systems utilize numerous adjustable legs for supporting the floating roof during low operation or maintenance cycles.   Each leg has a small gap that provides a transmission path for vapors to vent to atmosphere.  Mesa Leg Boots provide a highly economical method for covering these transmission paths, dramatically reducing emissions and product loss from the leg supports.
  • Slotted Gauge Poles
Most gauge poles on external floating roofs include several large slots along the pipes length to allow for accurate gauging and product sampling.  However, these slots allow a significant amount of vapor emissions to travel out through  the gauge pole and into the environment.  Mesa Gauge Pole Covers or Mesa Gauge Pole Floats provide an efficient method of preventing emissions with virtually no restrictions during operation.

Mesa Roof Leg Covers (Boots)

External Floating Roofs (EFR) use adjustable legs to support the floating roof above the tank floor during operation and maintenance cycles. A typical EFR has several heavy gauge leg supports with adjustable slots for pinning the legs in high or low position.

Each leg support penetration provides an emission path for vapors to travel from beneath the floating roof deck to the atmosphere above. Mesa Leg Boots are designed to reduce emissions and product loss caused by vapours escaping from the support legs.

Mesa leg boots are designed with MesaThaneTM 6036 Urethane seal material to form a covering for the support leg.   MesaThaneTM provides excellent chemical resistance for both the stored product on the inside, while providing a durable exterior to withstand even the harshest environmental conditions.

  • Interior Resists 100% aromatics, neat M.T.B.E. and gasohol vapours.
  • Exterior Resists UV, water and ozone effects.
  • Factory welded R/F seams provide durability.
  • Standard and custom sizes and configuration available.
  • Highly economical and efficient method of controlling vapour emissions on EFR systems.
  • Available in MesaThaneTM (Urethane) or MesalonTM (Teflon) for specialty applications .
  • Easy installation, even while tank is in service.

Mesa Gauge Pole Covers

Most gauge poles on external floating roofs include several large slots along the pipes length to allow for accurate gauging and product sampling.  However, these slots allow a significant amount of hydrocarbon vapor emissions to travel out through  the gauge pole and into the environment.

Mesa Gauge Pole Covers are designed with MesaThaneTM 6036 Urethane seal material to form a covering for the support leg. MesaThaneTM provides excellent chemical resistance for both the stored product on the inside while providing a durable exterior to withstand even the harshest environmental conditions.

The Mesa Gauge Pole Covers provides the most highly effective emission control solution, with no interference to gauging and sampling equipment.

  • Interior resists 100% aromatics, neat M.T.B.E. and gasohol vapors.
  • Exterior resists UV, water and ozone effects.
  • Easy zipper installation, even while tank is in-service.
  • Collapsible design facilitates normal tank operation.
  • Factory welded R/F seams provide durability.
  • Custom engineered for each gauge pole application to ensure efficiency.
  • Highly economical and efficient method of controlling vapour emissions on EFR systems.
  • Available in MesaThaneTM or MesalonTM (Teflon) for specialty applications

Mesa Gauge Pole Floats

Most gauge poles on external floating roofs include several large slots along the pipes length to allow for accurate gauging and product sampling.  However, these slots allow a significant amount of hydrocarbon vapour emissions to travel out through  the gauge pole and into the environment.

Mesa Gauge Pole Floats are designed to provide an economical solution to slotted gauge pole emissions, and can be installed in a matter of minutes.  Mesa Gauge Pole Floats seals to the interior of the gauge pole using two MesaThaneTM 6036 Urethane seals..

  • Seal material resists 100% aromatics, neat M.T.B.E. and gasohol vapors.
  • Durable Stainless Steel Construction with Stainless Steel Chain.
  • Easy installation and removal, even while tank is in-service.
  • Standard sizes to fit typical 8" diameter slotted gauge poles.
  • Highly economical and efficient method of controlling vapour emissions on EFR systems.
